We are proud to have Luca on TEAM SUBTECH as he provide us with invaluable feedback after putting our bags to extreme tests around the world.

We checked in with Luca to hear more about his professional career, how he got in to the sport and his personal favorite places to freedive on and which bag to bring on his epic adventures.

– How did you get into freediving and underwater photography and at what point could you do it full time?

I left the engineering life in Canada behind when I saw an opportunity just before COVID-19 to transition into a life of professional freediving, guiding spearfishing around expeditions around the world and underwater photography. It wasn’t an easy transition, after having dedicated 10 years of my life (basically my 20’s) to engineering, but I am very content to have started and followed a new chapter in life.

I knew I could transition to freediving full time when I became a Canadian Record Holder, started a school in Canada called Sea to Sky Freediving Co.and a sister school in the Philippines called Siquijor Freediving located on the magical Siquijor Island. This allowed me to use my experience and skills to then travel, join the world championships, teach in multiple schools around the world and be part of exciting film projects from Egypt to Greenland.

– You are living your life traveling the world, what is your favourite spot out of places you have visited?

That’s a tough one! No doubt (to date) the most interesting freediving I have ever done are:
1. Freediving and filming under the icebergs in East Greenland

2. Spearfishing among black tip reef sharks in the Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia

I cannot not mention the famous Blue Hole, in Dahab, Egypt. I spent countless hours diving and coaching here (while living in Egypt on multiple occasions). This by far will always be one of the places where I’ve left my freediving heart in!

– You have founded two Freediving companies in Canada and Philippines, can you tell us a bit about these?

Sea to Sky Freediving Co. is based in Squamish, British Columbia and focused on education and spearfishing expeditions. Here our goal is to bring students on Tide to Table Expeditions, where they learn to freedive, spearfish and harvest their own food. We prep, cook and eat together and connect over food just like our ancestors did.

Siquijor Freediving is based in the tropical Visayas in central Philippines and boasts 30C degree waters, stunning reefs and calm conditions.

This is an ideal place to train for freediving depth competitions and safely learn what your limit is. We have an excellent setup, a great team and some of the best conditions in the Philippines.

– Tell us about your best freediving/spearfishing experience?

Spearfishing truly the most ethical, responsible and sustainable way to eat fish. Period. Our ancestors did this for centuries before we decimated our world’s marine ecosystem with mass scale fishing practices and technology that does not allow fisheries and populations to reproduce.

Spearfishing is about selectively only taking the food you need to feed yourself and your family, while at the same time creating a powerful connection with your marine ecosystem and bringing awareness to its changes. We want to save the world’s oceans? Simple, start only eating seafood that has been spearfished.

My experience stems from having learned spearfishing from amazing guides/coaches around the world and my goal is to run ethically-focused Tide to Table Adventures teaching others about safe and responsible spearfishing practices.

I believe there’s no better way to connect with other humans than over a shared meal, and that can be even better when you freshly caught your own food!

– What is your favourite SUBTECH bag and why?
